서서울미술관 국제지명 설계공모_ Jiakun Architects

The Seo-Seoul Museum of Art is mainly constructed in the south, which is relatively spacious,
so as to reduce the building coverage and protecting the original landscape and plants of the
park as much as possible. Meanwhile, the volume ratio is reduced in response to the local
cold winter climate and conducive to building heat preservation and energy saving. The
northern side of the museum, which is adjacent to the park, has a lower height with the
overhanging corridor, thereby reducing the pressure on the park and creates a scale-friendly
facade. The excavation of the courtyard and the open-air eave gallery make the museum and
park fully blend and permeate together.
The amphitheater open to the public is set in the courtyard. The seats are raised step by step
to connect the park and the roof of the museum, making the roof a public leisure place,
"returning" the occupied space to the park and simultaneously increasing the entertainment.
Besides the circulation from the amphitheater, the roof is also accessible from the corridor on
the 6.6m floor, or through the barrier-free access from the exterior staircase and the lift to
the highest point of the museum, forming the pedestrian circulation. The gently sloping roof
combined with the landscape becomes a fun place for people to experience various activities
and exhibitions.
The building has a total height of 15m above ground. It is divided into the basement, the
ground, 3.3m floor, 6.6m floor and 9.9m floor. The basement is for the parking and the small
theater. The theater is separated from the education area and placed under the amphitheater,
which together form an independent performance space. The small theater is linked to the
public lounging area on the ground floor by the outdoor sunken courtyard and the indoor
lift. The ground floor has the lobby, exhibition halls and open public galleries, the cafeteria
and the collection area. The mezzanine at 3.3m is for office and management area. The 6.6m
floor is for the exhibition area and education area. The education area occupies both 6.6m
and 9.9m floors and is arranged around the atrium.
The south facade and the roof of the museum are partially equipped with solar panels to
provide sustainable energy for the building. The exhibition hall has north-facing skylights,
clearstory and ventilated louver to create an indoor environment with natural lighting and
ventilation. The black stone roof and composite bamboo facade utilize ecological and natural
materials, creating a calm and elegant architectural temperament. Through elements such as
the form of roof, the courtyard, the eave gallery, and the garden of pleasance, the museum
delivers its essential - the oriental connotation with the contemporary approach.
