It’s 3:00 AM.
You’re fast asleep… and suddenly you hear the sound of a drum echoing through the streets.

That’s not your phone alarm.

That’s the Musahharati — Ramadan’s original human alarm clock.

The Musahharati is a centuries-old Ramadan tradition in which a person walks through neighborhoods before dawn to wake people up for Suhoor (the pre-fast meal).

Historical references trace this tradition back to the Abbasid era in Egypt, where individuals were officially appointed to ensure that people did not miss Suhoor. Over time, the practice spread across many parts of the Muslim world — from Egypt and Morocco to Baghdad, Istanbul, Syria, and Yemen.

And it wasn’t limited to the Middle East.

In India, especially in older parts of cities like Hyderabad, Old Delhi, Lucknow, and other historic neighborhoods, similar traditions developed. Individuals would walk through narrow streets before dawn, calling out to residents or beating a drum to wake families for Sehri.

Sometimes, if someone was known for oversleeping, the Musahharati would even call them by name — adding a personal and humorous touch to the wake-up call.

Even today, in certain cities, this beautiful Ramadan tradition continues, keeping cultural heritage alive in the modern world.

So the next time your alarm goes off at 3AM and you feel annoyed…
remember — before smartphones, there was a man with a drum outside your window.

Which would you prefer?
Your phone alarm… or the Musahharati?
