OPVs occupy a unique role within a naval force. They are not combat ships, such as corvettes, frigates and destroyers, and are not designed to go in harm’s way. OPVs do not usually possess high-end sensors and weapons for wartime scenarios but instead are optimised for constabulary missions and day-to-day maritime security operations.
