Business Groups Warn Trump: $100K H-1B Fee Will Harm US Economy! - #H1BVisa #USEconomy

A powerful coalition of American business organizations has delivered a stark warning to President Donald Trump that his administration's dramatic H-1B visa fee increase to $100,000 could severely damage the US economy by crippling access to crucial foreign talent and leaving critical positions unfilled across multiple industries. In a strongly worded letter obtained by Bloomberg News, approximately a dozen industry groups representing chipmakers, software companies, retailers, and technology firms urged the administration to abandon the proposed changes that would impose "additional financial and administrative burdens on companies relying on foreign talent," marking a rare direct rebuke from the business community of Trump's immigration policies.

The signatories—including the Business Software Alliance, semiconductor industry group SEMI, the National Retail Federation, the Entertainment Software Association, and the Information Technology Industry Council—emphasized that the exorbitant fee hike threatens to disrupt talent pipelines for companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Walmart that have long depended on the skilled worker program. They specifically warned that cutting-edge sectors including artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering would suffer most, stating "The new approach to H-1B visas, as it stands, will harm the Administration's goals to ensure the US remains a leader in AI, revitalizes manufacturing growth, and propels US-developed energy," while noting that semiconductor giants Intel Corp., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Samsung Electronics Co., Applied Materials Inc. and KLA Corp. all have representatives on SEMI's board potentially affected by the changes.

While acknowledging Trump's efforts to attract domestic investment, the business coalition requested the administration collaborate with industry on "necessary reforms to the H-1B visa program without increasing the significant challenges US employers face recruiting, training, and retaining top talent." The letter represents growing corporate resistance to Trump's immigration overhaul announced last month, which the administration defended as necessary to curb program abuses and encourage hiring of domestic workers. However, business leaders counter that the $100,000 fee—a massive increase from current levels—would ultimately undermine American competitiveness in global markets and hamper innovation in precisely the advanced technology sectors the administration claims to prioritize, creating a fundamental contradiction between Trump's economic ambitions and his immigration restrictions.
