Watch the entire clip as I try to do my best to give both articulation and visualization of what I am teaching.
I have used many different techniques for beginners in the 30 years teaching and these particular techniques in the video have had the best results for both beginners as well with my intermediate surfing clients who had developed poor techniques threw the years.
The slide up technique along with a few other techniques in the video I have found to really help surfers just learning and for many who still struggle having a technique they are confident with. I have seen the success it has brought many of my students and others who either were taught by other instructors or learned on their own.
One thing I want to mention for the kids(6-10 yrs old)riding and learning on bigger boards is that to teach them you will have their shoulders closer to center of board as they are lighter and have less control of their legs staying over the tail and need to be further back. I do very well with kids under 10 or smaller kids by having their shoulders even with the center of the board to help keep the nose up. If they are riding and trying to learn on smaller boards like 6'6 or smaller than the chest or sternum even with the center works as long as they can keep legs and feet together while paddling. Parents teaching small children need to pay attention to this technique to help control tail of the board which will keep the nose up and nosediving less.

Watch pro surfers like Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Mark Occhilupo(Occy) who are technique specialist from start to finish and others who are arial specialist and tube riders like John John Florence, Julian Wilson and Gabriel Medina. Technique is important along with being gifted.
This video is focusing primarily on the beginner or a novice surfer stuck in a rut- watch Tom Curren and Kelly Slater videos where their hands push off the board and where their eyes are looking as they go to their feet. As your upper body gets stronger and with more ocean/wave knowledge, my technique "the slide up technique" will evolve into a perfect pop up and help you get your feet consistently down the middle of the board to the right position. If you start off with great balance and foot position it will be easier to go to the next level!
Best of luck with your surfing and really hope the video helps connect a few of the dots to help you reach the next level faster and safer!
