Old Flemish Christmas Song on the 1808 Historical Van Peteghem Organ, Buizingen (B)

Abraham van den Kerckhoven (1619-1702), Fantasia in G / Wim Winters, Historical 1808 Van Peteghemorgan, Buizingen (B)

A Christmas Song? Johan Zoutendijk, director of Verschueren Orgelbouw, the company who restored this magnificent historical Van Peteghem organ, has done lots of research towards the "Flemisch" composer/organist Abraham van den Kerckhoven. Read here what he found on this beautiful 17th century organ piece:

"This Fantasia was composed by Abraham van den Kerckhoven, organist at the court and at St. Catherinechurch in Brussels during the 17th century. The piece is characterized by a solo for the right-hand, probably intended for the ‘flemish’ Cornet-stop. Splitstops offer the possibility to play – even on single-keyboard organs - one of the voices solo, like it is demonstrated in this video.

It is likely that the melody is based on ‘Een kindeken is ons geboren’, an in past centuries well known folk song for Christmas time. The melody has several similarities with John Bull’s setting on the same song. Furthermore some elements in the text seems to have been ‘translated’ in the music: The repetition (3 times) of a motive in the third strain (bar 13, 14) refer to the mention of the three kings in the third-line of the text.In the second-last bar the c5 - the highest note on 17th century organ keyboards - sounds just when the star is mentioned in the song text!
The Van Peteghem-organ in Buizingen was built in the early 19th century, but the characteristics of the instrument are very classical and for that reason the instrument fits very well to this music. At this occasion the bellows have been pumped. The movement of the bellows results in a lively wind. In this coherence of repertoire, instrument and interpretation, the importance of this less-known ‘page’ from the organ culture in the Low Countries is demonstrated."
