"Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie" - Fingerstyle on 1929 National Triolian

Here's my cover of an old folk tune by Elizabeth Cotten. The guitar is a 1929 National "Hula Girl" Triolian Wood Bodied Resonator.

This is a rare guitar and it is very early in National's history. The serial number sequence for Triolians ran from 500-1626 before they switched to metal bodies. The serial number on this one is 729, making this example about the earliest I've personally ever seen. This was made when John Dopyera, who later left to form Dobro guitars, was still with National. They applied for the patent on the single cone resonator guitar in early 1929. While waiting for the patent approval, their guitars were stamped as "PAT APLD FOR" on the front just above the resonator cone. After that, they had patent numbers stamped. This one is a very early PAF-stamped one. Also, for about the first year of production on the single cone Triolian resonators, National made them with wood bodies. They switched to metal bodies the following year, making early wood-bodied Nationals very rare, and the PAF-stamped ones rarer still. The fact is, this was among the first couple hundred single cone resonator guitars ever built...by anyone...period. For a serious player or reso-phonic guitar collector, this is like the Ark of the Covenant.
