"Banksters" pitch: Alexander Lebedev about his film project
Can you imagine $1 trillion in cash? Actually, it is not so difficult. A billion dollars weighs 10 tons and will fit in a large semi-trailer truck. Trillion - a convoy of thousand trucks, stands from New York JFK airport to Wall Street on Manhattan.
According to the research by international volunteer organizations, more than $1 trillion all over the world is annually stolen trough corruption and fraud from tax-payers and clients of financial institutions. These assets are laundered in offshore harbors, deposited in the accounts of the world's largest banks and investment funds, invested in securities, real estate and luxury goods - yachts and private jets, jewelry, masterpieces of art. The volume of ‘dirty money’ reaches $60 trillion, which is comparable to the GDP of the planet.
A series of films, united by the common brand ‘Banksters’ (combination of ‘Bankers’ and ‘Gangsters’), is investigating the functioning of the international white-collar crime. The breathtaking story of each film is based on real events and is an investigation of a multi-billion dollar scam, related with the theft, money laundering and spending of ‘dirty money’. The authors reveal the fraudulent schemes, business and romantic relationships of the involved characters, the crimes associated with them, including kidnappings and contract killings.
The characters of the episodes are politicians and oligarchs, their wives and mistresses, special services and law enforcement executives, mafia bosses and gangsters, agents of Interpol and private detectives, judges and lawyers, journalists and their informants from among officials and bank clerks, cultural figures and stars of show business. All of these characters really exists and live in perfectly known locations (London, Cote d’Azur of France, Miami, etc.)
‘Banksters’ raise for the mass audience a curtain of secrecy, hiding what is happening behind the glamorous showcase of the life of the world elite, the sources of origin of huge fortunes and the lifestyle of their successors. Thus, the global social mission of the project is to provoke spectator to reflect on the fairness of the world of big money and the need to change the existing order of things.
