Christian Gerhaher in conversation with Albrecht Mayer

Known in equal measure as concert singer, opera singer and Lieder singer, Christian Gerhaher is one of the most prominent musicians of our time. For the 2013-14 season, he was appointed Artist in Residence with the Berliner Philharmoniker. To kick off the year of collaboration, the baritone interpreted Gustav Mahler’s early stroke of genius Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen: a cycle that artfully shimmers between major and minor, between the beautiful world of nature and the protagonist’s sad soul, which clearly refers back to Schubert, not just through its reference to the linden tree. In conversation in the interval with Albrecht Mayer, principal oboist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Christian Gerhaher speaks about his affinity to Mahler and the question of whether one’s personal experiences should have some influence on one’s musical interpretations.
