Slam your stem - A controversial one to start with. Getting low is a sure fire way to get some extra speed as you will be capturing less air with your upper body, and if really extreme you could end up looking like a downhill skier. Apparently, you could save up to 10watts in aerodynamic drag if you lower your stem by 20mm, and accordingly reduce the angle of your torso too. But, it’s not all plain sailing as you need to have the strength to be able to ride and hold the position too. And for those of you wanting to slam, any changes should be in very small amounts and over a period of time. Don’t do it all at once as it could lead to injury.
Narrower bars - So you’ve slammed your stem and got nice and low at the front end. We’re not done though, oh no! We’re now going to reduce your frontal area, that means getting narrow. Traditionally riders would opt for handlebars that were roughly the same size as their shoulders. However, there's been a bit of a buck to that trend. Over the past 5 years or so we’ve seen more and more professional cyclists going for narrower handlebars, maybe a couple of cms narrower or even to the extreme of Jan-Willem van Schip a dutch rider who is using, wait for it, 32cm wide bars at the hoods.
