Oyster Mushroom Food, Medicine and More
Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) grow in ever ecosystem from temperate to tropical.
Their enzyme suite is extremely good at breaking down compounds from coffee to corn to trees to cardboard. Making them an easy one to grow at home or harvest in the wild.
Here on the WestCoast, they like Alder Trees, but they have been known to grow on Maple, Beech, Oak and many other trees.
They form in abundant clusters in the Springtime and are best harvested when young
Do not in areas where there is heavy pollution because Oysters work in the environment to bio-remediate toxins.
They contain many useful compounds including thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, sterols, vitamin D2, and D4 gamma ergosterols, carotenoids, and bioflavonoids. They also are high in protein and contain many minerals like copper and zinc.
They contain ubiquitin which is a type of protein that binds to other waste proteins and helps recycle or remove them from the body.
The type of ubiquitin in them has shown to help stop the decision of viral infected cells, specifically HIV. But there is also some promise for other viral loads as well.
Health benefits:
Help with hypoglycemia and blood sugar regulation.
Cholesterol - Contain lovastatin the original Staten drug
Supportive for High Blood pressure, but will not lower blood pressure if it is already too low.
Offering lots of support for liver health and blood vessels
Immunomodulating polysaccharides, including beta-glucan
Inhibiting tumor growth and prevention.
Consumption of Oyster Mushrooms lowers blood concentrations of triglycerides, cholesterol and oxidized LDL due to a naturally occurring statin drug Lovastatin.
Consumption
Don't eat raw, make sure to lightly cook with oil, or my favourite is to marinate and bake.
Hope you get out and find some of these for yourself this year.
