(1930’s - 1960’s) Fairy Cliff Cafe - Herod, IL

On the north end of Herod, IL, just a few miles up the road from the Garden of the Gods outpost, is an interesting roadside attraction I’ve passed by many times and wondered about. During the Great Depression, the Fairy Cliff Cafe operated until the 1960’s. I don’t know much more about it as information is scarce. The remnants of the old cafe include a small portion of the brick wall, some concrete footings, and the old brick fireplace plus some electrical conduit. The cave appeared to have been used at one time, and rumor has it a caged bear may have been in kept in the cave (but no fairies were ever imprisoned).

I’ve seen motorcyclists stop off there for a rest break. The area has a small gravel pad to pull off the road, and some gravel that leads back to the cave nook. There is a picnic table on the site for grabbing a quick lunch break.

If you’re ever in the area, check out the Garden of the Gods, High Knob, the Garden of the Gods Outpost, and Pounds Hollow.

If you like what you’ve seen, feel free to like, comment, or subscribe. As always, thanks for watching.
