Courage - Sammy Davis Jr.

In honor of Juneteenth we are showcasing this rare and powerful civil rights song Sammy recorded in 1965. It was written by Jerry Samuels (who also wrote Sammy's smash hit “The Shelter Of Your Arms” in 1963). We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Samuels and discussed the origins of “Courage”. He believes that in 1965 the lyrics may have been seen as inflammatory, which he regrets to this day. We are now in a different moment in history, a moment where courage is once again needed and is on display every day around the country and the world: “I need courage in a world that tramples on me / Help me stand straight and tall and I’ll face them all / ’Cause I just can’t live if I can’t be free.” Please share with us in the comments your impressions of this song and Sammy’s interpretation of it.
