The western honey bee – or Apis mellifera if you’re feelin’ fancy – gets its name from Latin. Apis means “bee” and mellifera means “honey-bearing”, which is bang on. These little legends are famous for makin’ and stashin’ honey, and they’ve become one of the most important and well-travelled bee species on the planet. Whether it’s helpin’ crops grow or keepin’ nature in check, they’re absolute top blokes in the bug world.
