Trained at Seth GS Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Guy's and St Thomas' Medical School, Dr. Soumitra Pathare (MD MRCPsych Ph.D.) is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Director of the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy at the Indian Law Society. His primary interests are in the areas of mental health policy, scaling up mental health services, rights-based care, and legislation.
He has provided technical assistance to the Government of India in drafting India’s new Mental Healthcare Act 2017 and the country’s first National Mental Health Policy released in October 2014.
He has served as a WHO consultant in Botswana, Seychelles, Lesotho, Samoa, Vanuatu, Eritrea. He has conceptualized and steered various innovative community-led mental health interventions.
A staunch mental health advocate, he believes that all persons with mental illness should be able to participate in every aspect of the society just as everyone else.
