Hunsberger Amish Barn Raising in 99 seconds--November 5, 2021

The following was distributed on a simple flyer distributed to the couple hundred onlookers who gathered on the other side of the barn to observe the construction:

The barn has become an icon of American Agriculture--a structure that lives and breathes hard work and creates space for community. When we lost our barn to fire in April 2020, we lost not only a prominent piece of the landscape but also a historical piece of property.

The original barn was built in the mid-1800s while Joseph Schantz III lived here. He was the grandson of Joseph Schantz, the Swiss-German man who founded Johnstown, PA. Our family is honored to be a part of the history and legacy of the Johns' farm while we remold it and reshape it for today's agriculture. While we cannot replace what we've lost, the community spirit of an Amish barn raising is symbolic of what we felt as our community joined together to support us after the fire. We felt you share the burden and sadness of our loss. We were lifted through prayer, conversation, working hands, food, and gifts. The possibility for a barn raising became more real as we received the monetary gifts that many of you provided after the fire. We hoped to allow our community to also share in the joy of rebuilding a space that can again be used for animals and storage of hay, lime, equipment, and machinery.

A note about Amish barn raising:
Barn raising is not solely used as structural replacement of what is lost by a family. They use it to support their overall needs. The Amish do not have insurance but depend on their religious community to share each other's joys and burdens. When there is a significant need, they financially support each other. One of the ways they build the fund is through barn raising. Each laborer volunteers their time, and the wage they earn for their work is applied to their community's fund. Our farm will be paying their bill for labor today; however, if you wish to give an additional contribution to their fund, look for the collection jar.

The Amish are being generous in allowing our community to experience and witness something that is a normal expression of their life and support of one another. Please be respectful of their request regarding no closeup photography. They have allowed us the opportunity to have photos taken from a distance, and document the raising in various media forms. Also, please be respectful of the work boundary areas that they requested be created for them. The barn raising today is truly a working model of living life in Christ.

Thank you.
