New Polish pro-EU government attempts to restore press freedom amid protest | DW News

There were tense scenes at Poland's public broadcaster today as the new pro-EU government faced a first test of its pledge to restore free expression to state media.

Police had to be called in when lawmakers of the populist Law and Justice party staged a sit-in at the country's TVP public broadcaster. That followed the new government sacking the heads of TVP and Polish Radio. Law and Justice led the previous government, which critics said had used public media as propaganda tools. On Tuesday Poland's parliament authorized a resolution to restore legal order, objectivity and fairness in public media.
The former Prime Minister from Law and Justice also joined the protest.
