The Year That Ended Pete Duel's Life (From Alias Smith & Jones)
Pete Duel was a television actor that was best known for his role as one of the two titular characters on the hit ABC Western Alias Smith and Jones. Pete played a character by the name of Hannibal Heyes, whose alias was “Smith”. Despite the show being a massive success, Pete was incredibly unhappy with it. Before the show had even made it through it’s first year, Pete took his own life.

Pete was the first son of a doctor and initially wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps. He began studying medicine while attending Lawrence University. As he was studying, he began to become increasingly less interested in medicine and increasingly more interested in acting. Pete had taken up with the school’s drama department and had acted in every play that it put on since becoming a student. After two years of studying medicine, Pete decided that he wanted to focus all of his attention on acting instead.
After a few years in New York City’s theater scene, Pete decided that he wanted to try his hand at becoming a Hollywood actor. In the early 1960s, Pete made his way to Hollywood. After being cast as several background villains and thugs, Pete finally got a noteworthy role on the show Gidget. Following this, Pete was given the task of playing one of the leads in the 1966 sitcom Love on a Rooftop.
Pete made his feature film debut in 1968, acting in the film To Hell with Heroes. Subsequently, he was offered a starring role on an ABC Western series that was to be called Alias Smith and Jones. The show became a massive hit, but Pete was becoming less and less interested in acting on television in general. Less than a year into the show’s production, he took his own life.
