40 Year Old Food Forest: Gummy Bear Fruit, Bilimbi, Mountain Soursop + (Part 1 of 2)
Day #3 of our fruit hunting expedition & we finish the trip with a super sweet visit to Robert Barnum's place in Homestead, Florida... The infamous Possum Trot Tropical Fruit Nursery!
This place is known by every fruit aficionado in South Florida & beyond & Robert Barnum's 40-year-old collection of rare tropical fruits is a sight to behold! You will be as inspired as we are, for sure, when you see what we find!
Be sure to check out the past 2 days of footage to see the hundreds of mango varieties from our field trips to TREC (University of Florida's IFAS Program) & the USDA Tropical Research Facility - you'll find some awesome footage of cacao, lychees, jackfruit & mamey sapote.
AND..... Be sure to come back for tomorrow's footage where we will show off more jackfruit, bananas, bacuripari & more rare tropical treats at Possum Trot.

(1:24) Robert takes the fruit hunting crew straight to the Bilimbi Tree to see the unique clusters of fruit. These fruits are widespread in the tropics & originate from Indonesia. It is a close relative to the carambola (starfruit).
(2:20) Robert Barnum discusses the origins of the infamous 'Purple Possum' passionfruit variety.
(3:25) We come across some ''Gummy Bear Fruit" or the Cercropia Tree. This sweet & gummy-textured fruit is a rare treat, since your only chance of tasting this fruit is finding a mature tree. (they go bad within an hour or two, so you will never see them in the store.)
(6:28) Madrono fruit tasting
(7:05) The super lush & generous... Glenn Mango in its full glory (& almost ready for harvest)
(8:57) Harvesting some Mountain Soursop for the 'Taste of Lee' event. Robert discusses the medicinal value & describes the interesting flavor.
(10:25) The ladies find some Rose Apples to show off for the camera.
(11:01) Wax Jambu Tree with fruit that's ready to pick & a giant Chaya bush to show off life with the butterflies.
