Imagine a world where the Pacific Northwest nearly became British territory. Back in the early 1800s, the U.S. and Britain were locked in a heated dispute over the Oregon Country. As more American settlers arrived, they pushed for control all the way up to the 54°40′ line of latitude. Eventually, both sides agreed to avoid war, and in 1846, the Oregon Treaty set the boundary at the 49th parallel. This invisible line, if you follow it on a map, cuts right through the Pacific Northwest, separating the U.S. from Canada. But had the border been drawn higher, things would look very different today—British Columbia could have stretched much farther south, and cities like Seattle and Portland might’ve grown up under a British flag.
