9 PLEIN AIR TIPS for watercolor artists

Today I decided not to do a usual watercolor tutorial but rather take you with me plein-air painting. I used to be really uncomfortable with the idea of plein-air painting. In this video, I will cover some tips that helped me make plein-air experience more enjoyable! I will also share my painting setup - it is very minimal, and that is a very important factor. If I had a lot of art supplies to carry with me, I don't think I would paint plein-air as often. Finally, I will share some benefits of plein-air painting that I discovered for myself, and I hope these will inspire you to go out and paint!

I use a variety of watercolor paint brands (Daniel Smith, Holbein, M.Graham, Nevskaya Palitra) but all of them are professional watercolors. I used to buy student-grade paints but now I stay away from them as they contain a lot of additives and little pigment. When painting, I had to apply so much paint just to get any pigment out of them. Professional paints seem to be more economical.

Paper: Etchr, the Perfect Sketchbook. You may use any brand you like but, most importantly, use 100% cotton.

Brushes: I use a variety of brushes by different brands: Silver Brush, Chinese calligraphy brushes from Blue Heron Art and Michael Solovyev, squirrel brushes by Roubleff, synthetic by Escoda and Etchr, and a few other different brands. I think it is helpful to buy good quality brushes but most important is the time you spend with that brush.
