Simplicity, Speed, and Scalability / Dr. Raj Ramesh / Intersection18

The environment around us is changing fast.

At work, as an employee in a business, you realize that businesses have to change, transforming themselves rapidly to offer remarkable customer experiences, at speed, and at scale. Companies that say, sell books cannot just stop with the selling part. Rather, they have to build relationships with customers, offer recommendations on what others like them read, enable them to follow their favorite authors, make writing reviews easy, and enable their customers to read the book at any place and any time, on the channel they prefer.

At home, as a customer of many businesses and organizations, your experience is changing. Even if you are shopping for something as mundane as insurance, you expect the service you’d receive from the best online retailers like Amazon. You want personalized recommendations, want to know how other customers feel about the product, want to be able to rate the product, have the coverage instantly, and be able to do this all on your phone.

The world is getting complex, and we have to operate in this complexity. Things are more connected than they ever were, and the future of such connectivity growth is exponential. While such a high degree of connectivity enables scale, it also increases complexity. We need some tools and approaches to think about and deal with this complexity, and yet deliver elegantly simple experiences for customers. You need to focus on the simplicity of designing experience. Business processes behind the experiences may be complex, but you shouldn’t expose that complexity to the customer.

You need to focus on the speed of change to adapt quickly to your changing environment. You may architect for today’s problem, but how can you continue to refine the architecture to adapt, as the world around continuously changes.

You need to focus on scale to grow. If the initial architecture and design are not done with scalability in mind, you’ll end up rearchitecting the same solution, at a time when you can’t afford to. How can you think far, but build for now?

We explore the various topics from business strategy to execution in the context of transforming an organization. We’ll discuss some of the real-life examples of what to do and what not to do.

I’ll share examples of how architecture, design, and technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) could be integrated to deliver on the promise of simplicity, speed and scale. By the end of the talk, you will have clarity on how to think big, start small, and scale fast.
