Legal Maxim#Bona Vacantia#: What Happens to Ownerless Property?"

"Bona vacantia" is a Latin term meaning "ownerless goods." In legal contexts, it refers to property that has no apparent owner, often because the owner has died without a will, the property has been abandoned, or the owner cannot be located. This concept is most commonly applied in relation to estates when a person dies intestate (without a will), or when there is no known heir or beneficiary.

In many countries, when property is classified as bona vacantia, it may be transferred to the government or a public authority.
Generally, if an owner or heir is eventually found, the property may be reclaimed. However, after a certain period, unclaimed property may become the permanent property of the state or relevant authority.
