Think all paintings HAVE to be on stretched canvas? Here's an Alternative

For my new big pieces - the "Holy Mothers" series and some recent big abstract pieces - I’ve chosen to sew a hem rather than stretch the finished painting.

The repetitive meditative rhythm of sewing, touching, nurturing has become my goodbye ritual. I'm imbuing these pieces with breath, with life, so that I can say goodbye. So that these paintings can go out into the world as living entities - separate from me, secure in themselves.

Rather than stretching them taut and anchoring them in constant tension with severe staples and wedges, they are given a soft border. A clear boundary — but within the boundary they are soft. Relaxed. Themselves.

What would happen if we treated our paintings more like tender bodies - and our bodies more like beautiful paintings?

With love,

CJ
