The mob 'will come after you' if you leave the Left: Dave Rubin

Coming out of the "political closet" is harder than coming out as gay because the online Left target those who challenge their political orthodoxy, according to Youtuber and author Dave Rubin.

Mr Rubin, whose highly successful 'Rubin Report' has over one million subscribers, came to prominence in 2017 where he announced he was leaving the Left, describing the progressive movement of having a "mob-like" and "collectivist" ideology.

The 41-year-old who describes himself as a libertarian who supports same-sex marriage, marijuana legalization and a limited social net, said he has been embraced by conservatives even if they disagree with his position.

"You start seeing the people on the other side, the conservatives, the libertarians, and you have been trained as a leftie that these are the bad guys, they care about money, and care about war, and don't care about poor people," he told Sky News.

"It takes a while to really understand that in most cases, they are kinda sitting their with their arms open, going hey 'we can agree to disagree, let's talk it out.'"

The openly gay Youtuber, who used to be an active participant in left wing causes and programs, says he gradually became disenchanted with identity politics.

"When you come of the political closet, and in this case basically just saying 'I'm not a leftie, I'm not a progressive, I don't believe in identity politics or collectivism, or socialism or whatever that might be,' the amount of hatred you get for that is unbelievable and really scary."

"I know this sounds kinda crazy, but coming out of the political closet (is harder than coming out as gay), is scarier because the mob will come for your job, your livelihood, and your family."

Mr Rubin said his new book 'Don't Burn This Book' challenges readers to resists about orthodoxies and live their own lives freely.

"Think for yourself, think independently, don't think just because a political party, or a politician, or a movie star, says 'hey you gotta believe these ten things on one side, or these ten things on the other', don't think that is true and right."

"You are allowed to look at issues individually and figure out what make sense to you."
