After shutting down Mount Rushmore, we stayed the night at our first Cabela’s and did a little shopping before heading to the GMC dealership to get mud flaps for our trip to Alaska and a new key fob programmed.

In order to program the fob, the dealership needed access to the truck, so we parked where they told us to along the back side of the service department. They informed us that they would come get us when it was done. Lily happened to look up from the waiting area to see our truck and trailer weaving through the lot. A young employee decided to drive our truck and home around the lot and park it in a place where you couldn’t pull out of. We had to back it out. Good lesson learned. Be sure to tell anyone working on your truck or RV that you want to be the one to move it if needed. Thankfully, the rig was closed up and ready to move. Nothing was damaged on the inside, and he didn’t hit anything weaving through the dealership lot.

Following our eventful morning, we make the drive through the rest of South Dakota, encountering our first wind storm causing us to have to pull off the road and hide behind a building until the winds died down. It is a scary thing to feel your truck being pulled side to side by your trailer in the wind!

We make it to Devil’s Tower and are pleasantly surprised by the beautiful paved trail that wraps around the base of this National Monument. The history and science of this stunning place blew us away almost as much as the views from the trail. Weather threatened to be a problem again as severe thunderstorms were forecasted, but we dodge most of the rain and the storm clouds gave us an epic sunset.

We arrive in Buffalo, WY, in the middle of the night to see Jess’ friend’s mom and dad, Pegi and Lloyd, where they summer in their RV. Next episode, we cross the Big Horn Mountains and arrive at the cattle ranch where we will be volunteering for a few days before setting out to see the Grand Tetons!
