Communication in Multicultural Teams: 6 Steps to Make it Work | Be an Effective Communicator
Establishing an environment of open communication, cross-cultural sensitivity, and inclusivity is the key to maintaining good relationships across diverse teams.
6 Steps to Effective Communication in Multicultural Teams:
1. Keep communication simple. Encourage your team to be as clear and brief as possible when conveying the core message. If English is the official language in your office, try to use international English, rather than regionalisms, or idiomatic expressions that the listeners may not understand.
In order to make your spoken and written language clear, concise, and universally understood, I recommend checking out the “Plain English Campaign” at http://plainenglish.co.uk/.
Also, avoid jargon and acronyms.
jargon = terms that are unique and known only in a specific field and
acronyms = a collection of letters which stands for something
As a tip, if you use an acronym or jargon term, just define it for the listener.
2. Use #storytelling techniques. Stories serve to better illustrate your message and make it memorable. You can also an analogy. An analogy is a comparison between two things, for the purpose of explanation.
3. Ask questions and encourage others to ask questions. Asking questions opens up the door for others to share their thoughts, and they may have valuable insights or solutions which you wouldn’t know unless you ask.
Be careful about how you ask questions, though. It’s very common in many cultures to answer “Yes” even if the answer is “No.”
If you’re working in a multicultural environment where there are people who struggle to say no directly, try modifying the way you ask questions. Instead of asking “Do you understand?” which will get you only yes or no and may land you in a trap, try asking: “What did you learn?”
4. Repeat as needed. Encourage your team to convey messages frequently and clearly. Try to transmit the idea to your team that repetition and review are perfectly fine. There’s nothing wrong with asking to repeat something.
5. Show, as well as tell: lead by example. Strong communication practices are essential in virtually any workplace or business situation.
6. Get cross-cultural training as a team. In addition to improving intercultural communication skills, this type of training inherently helps build understanding and collaboration among multicultural teams.
