Capture Cape Cod Through the Arts: Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, also known as the People of the First Light, has inhabited present day Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island for more than 12,000 years.
The Tribe is rich with culture which is on full display annually which takes place annually at the beginning of July at the Wampanoag Powwow. Held at 483 Great Neck Road South in Mashpee, the Wampanoag Powwow is a traditional social with a different theme every year.
The event, which is open to the public, features contests, food, vendors, drumming, dancing, and the Grand Entry held daily in the afternoon. The annual pawâw featured special events, contests, food, vendors, drumming and dancing will be held on the Pawâw Grounds at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Community and Government Center. Gates will open daily at 10 AM with Grand Entry at 1 PM.
Also featured in the video is the construction of a wetu, a Wampanoag seasonal house, used during the warmer months and traditionally build near the coast. @HeritageMandGVideos partnered with SmokeSygnals (https://www.nativeamericancreative.com/) to construct this wetu over the course of one week in April-May 2021 which is currently on display at Heritage Museums & Gardens.
