Teachers in Abia State are preparing for an indefinite strike beginning April 24, citing the state government's failure to implement the Teacher Salary Structure (TSS) and enforce the 65-year retirement age policy. The TSS, introduced by the federal government in 2020, aims to provide competitive salaries for teachers. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed frustration over prolonged negotiations without tangible results. In response, the Abia State government has introduced emergency measures to prevent the strike.

Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, acknowledged the teachers’ concerns but accused political opponents of inflaming the issue. He claimed the government has already implemented several pro-teacher policies, including raising the retirement age and paying salaries on time. However, disparities in pay between primary and junior secondary teachers remain unresolved. Talks between the government and union leaders are ongoing, but no agreement has been confirmed as of yet.
