Tango from Latvija 1936: Konstantin Sokolskij - Skazhi, gdie ty? (Tell Me, Where Are You)?
Konstantin Sokolskij & Ork. Bellaccord – (Skazhi) Gdie ty? (Where Are You, Tell Me?) Tango (Mark Marianowski) Bellaccord , Latvija c. 1936
NOTE: Konstantin SOKOLSKIJ (Konstantin Kudryavtsev b. 1904 in Sankt Petersburg, Russia – d. 1991 in Riga, Latvija ) born to the Latvijan family in |Russia, Konstantin moved from St. Petersburg to Riga in Latvija, after the Soviet revolution of 1917. There, he worked in the woodcutting factory before he appeared on stage in the Riga movie theatre in 1928. Between the wars, film presentations in cinemas were usually preceded by live artistic performances, which often became a springboard catapulting budding artists into illustrious careers. Initially, Sokolsky imitated the Alexander Vertinsky style and he too sang in a Pierrot costume, before he found his own lyrical genre especially when he met the famous Latvijan tango composer Oscar Strok and became the first to sing his new songs. During the 1930s Sokolsky became a well known singer in Latvija, he also went on tours of Romania, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, where he became enormously popular among Russian émigrés. He survived the 2nd WW, however I haven’t found informations on his life in Riga during the Soviet era.
The slideshow shows some views of beautiful old Riga in the interwar period. I had the opportunity to visit Riga twice during the first years of its independence regained in 1990 and I must say that it was being meticulously restored while I was there and now looks as beautiful as it does on these old postcards.
