Power Steering Flush and Screen Cleaning

This is a quick upload of a procedure I performed to cure my car of a cold start power steering whine. The project took an afternoon, although there was some prep time, planning how to cleanly flush the system, finding the right size hoses, cleaning the plastic jugs, getting the new power steering fluid etc. It was important to secure everything. The hoses were well clamped where I connected them to the existing hoses, the hoses were secured so they would not whip around, and the jugs were secure so they would not tip over.

The screen in the power steering reservoir serves as the filter for the system. Obviously in the video, it was clogged. There’s no by-pass for the screen and that caused the flow restriction when cold and at high RPMs.

The flow rate in the power steering system was interesting. With the steering wheel turning at a reasonable rate, I estimate the flow rate to be 1.75 gallons per minute.

After using the car for several days, I did notice a bit of weeping of power steering fluid on the outside of the reservoir, just a slight film of power steering fluid really. I did crimp the tabs as firmly as I could but I suspect the gasket didn’t fully seat. It should settle down after some time and temperature cycles.
