Actor Troy Kotsur reacts to Oscar nomination for 'CODA'

(8 Feb 2022) ACTOR TROY KOTSUR REACTS TO OSCAR NOMINATION FOR 'CODA'
Actor Troy Kotsur says receiving a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his work on drama "CODA" is "a historic moment."
The 53-year-old became the first deaf male actor to receive an Academy Award nomination Tuesday (8 FEBRUARY 2022), following the lead of his "CODA" co-star Marlee Matlin who won the best actress Oscar in 1987 for her work in drama "Children of a Lesser God."
"I feel like I have dust that's been on my back that finally is starting to become clean," says Kotsur. "I feel a bit lighter. This chip is off my shoulder... It'll be documented. Even after I leave this planet, it'll still be documented in the history books. And so it's truly a blessing."
"CODA," which is also nominated for best picture, follows the story of Ruby, played by Emilia Jones, who is the only hearing person in her family of four, which includes her father Frank Rossi (Kotsur), mother Jackie (Matlin) and brother Leo (Daniel Durant).
Tensions in the family come to a boiling point when Ruby, who's served as their interpreter virtually her entire life, contemplates leaving their fishing business—and the family—with dreams to pursue music in college.
"I feel that Hollywood is starting to give several opportunities out to deaf actors, and I feel like this is just the beginning," continues Kotsur. "It's like the thunderbolt. And it is increasing awareness of deaf people because we have so many stories to tell. I'm extremely excited about that. It's like a step forward for everyone and to share our experiences and our journey. And the important thing is to work as a collaboration. It doesn't matter if they're deaf or hearing."
He would advise anyone wanting to follow in his footsteps to pursue their dreams - no matter what their age or background.
"I think dreams can come true. I've been dreaming of something like this. You know, it really doesn't matter the time - look at me. I am proof that amazing things can happen and you just have to enjoy the journey. It doesn't matter if the destination is close or far - just have fun on your journey. And so many people are suffering to be actors. But I'm so grateful that I've just made it through all of this struggle and just remember that no one can stop you, and no one can take your dreams away."
