Dylan's Mum Ange is here!
We are super excited to give her a taste of life in Indonesia. We head up the mountain in search of cheeky monkeys and show her around the island of Lombok.
We also pay a visit to Lombok Elephant Park, where we are disappointed to discover it is not as it appears.
We were sceptical of the park but were convinced by fellow cruisers it was an ethical facility that cared for rescued animals. We turned up on our scooters unannounced and it felt as if they were not prepared for us. They rushed to gather an employee who spoke English to accompany us through the park. Instead of telling us what we WANTED to hear, he told us the truth and innocently confessed that the park caged exotic birds until they became familiar with their surroundings, clipped the birds wings then allowed them to 'be free' on perches along the pathway...
The monkey and orangutan facilities were lacking trees/foliage and stimulus. They seemed bored and sad.
Many other animals lived in small quarters or tiny cages and the elephants seemed to be kept on display in a concrete pen. We even learned they offered elephant rides... this is a hallmark of the unethical treatment of animals. We feel sad and ashamed we gave this park our money, our visit was a brief.
