Addressing the VAT Challenges of Digital Trade

Value Added Taxes – or VAT – are a crucial source of revenue for 170 countries worldwide. VAT accounts for 20% of global total tax revenues on average and is often the main revenue source in developing countries. The e-commerce revolution has put VAT-systems under severe pressure, as it is more difficult to collect VAT from online sellers that are often located abroad. The OECD has delivered internationally agreed solutions for the effective collection of VAT on digital sales. These reforms have delivered impressive results so far.
