#TakeTwoKnees - Deep River

As an institution, the police protect people, just not my people. During slavery, they were there to protect people, just not my people. After slavery and through the civil rights movement, they were there to protect people, just not my people. The decades that followed, during my lifetime, do you think they changed? There was never a time in American history when I would have felt safe from the institution that was created to, among other things, protect the world from me. It’s hard to explain what the weight of generational and institutionalized abuse feels like, but I can tell you that it is everywhere. As I live my dream life, even without experiencing the weight of poverty and the reality of an unjust educational system, I still feel its existence. I am fully aware that being an orchestra musician and a professor, mean nothing when a cop thinks the phone you’re holding, or the flute case you’re carrying, is a weapon. If I happen to be anyplace at the wrong time, it could easily be me face down on the pavement with a knee pressed against my neck, and I wouldn’t even be surprised; just angry, frustrated, and sad as all of my brothers and sisters have felt for generations. #JusticeForFloyd #HowAboutNow #ICareAboutBlackLives #SongsOfComfort #FluteSolo #Flute
