Choosing a piano in the UK: best makes, tone, stability and touch. Please see also jump links below:
10 checking the tone in the mid-treble area
40 checking the tuning. If it's clearly very out of tune then it will probably have loose tuning pins which need replacement. See
30 comparing the tone of a Knight and Yamaha upright
01 Checking the down-weight. If it's too heavy then it's uncomfortable to play; too light or uneven and it's not suitable for study. 50g ± 2g is normal. 40g would be too light for study and 60g too heavy for comfort. 5 x £1 coins and a 20p is 48.75g and a good weight to test with.
11 buying an older piano. Please see our "Common and Top makes" page https://www.robertspianos.com/common-piano-makes-in-the-uk/. for an appraisal of each make.
05 Pianos with problems: these are in our storage area awaiting a decision:
12 Bechstein model V upright 1891. Thin middle tone; loose tuning pins, etc. The tone of these is usually warm in the mid-treble. Loose tuning pins are frequently a problem with this model.
38 Bluthner x-player piano. Unusually thin mid-treble tone; loose tuning pins.
51 Welmar with a thin mid-treble tone.
06 Challen with thin mid-treble tone.
10 Playing a fully restored Bosendorfer 170 grand piano + further comments.
General comment: We are also careful to choose pianos that have had very little use, although we also fully restore or recondition top makes such as Blüthner, Bechstein, Bösendorfer and Steinway. The main wearing parts are the hammers, shanks and rollers. We frequently replace these and have many videos showing pianos we've restored or reconditioned. Marcus Roberts started tuning pianos mostly in West Sussex and Hampshire in 1980, and dealing in pianos from 1985 in Portsmouth and then Oxford in 1995.
