Former minister Bassil explains Lebanon's opportunity for being a 'real economic bridge'

In an interview for Al Mayadeen, Lebanese MP and former minister Gebran Bassil, the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, argued that any internal agreement in Lebanon must go beyond political compromise and avoid turning the country into a state of dependency on foreign powers.

He stressed that Lebanon should not remain a "small country in need," but rather one that draws strength from its strategic geography, human capital, and diaspora, noting its position along major global corridors from the Strait of Hormuz to Bab al-Mandab and the Suez Canal.

Bassil said Lebanon has so far remained absent from key regional economic and energy routes, despite its potential to act as a bridge between East and West through trade, energy, and connectivity projects.

He concluded that Lebanon must decide whether to remain a vulnerable pressure point or turn into a regional hub built on internal unity and a clear national vision.
