Liver Abscess & Portal Vein Thrombosis Caused by Streptococcus: A Rare Case Report & Review
Liver Abscess & Portal Vein Thrombosis Caused by Streptococcus: A Rare Case Report & Review
📌 In this video, we discuss a rare and critical case of a 51-year-old male patient with a liver abscess caused by α-hemolytic Streptococci, complicated by portal vein thrombosis (PVT). This condition is life-threatening, and only a few cases have been reported worldwide.
🔬 Key Points Covered:
✔ Symptoms: Fever, right hypochondriac pain, chronic diarrhea, and bloody stools.
✔ Diagnosis: A 15 cm solitary liver abscess with PVT detected via imaging.
✔ Causative Organism: Streptococcus spp. (α-hemolytic Streptococci).
✔ Treatment: Successful management with percutaneous drainage, antibiotics, and anticoagulants.
✔ Literature Review: Only 6 reported cases of liver abscess + PVT due to Streptococcus.
✔ Prognosis: Outcomes vary—some patients recover, while others face fatal complications like multi-organ failure.
📖 Why This Case Matters?
Highlights the deadly combination of liver abscess + PVT.
Emphasizes early diagnosis & multidisciplinary treatment (antibiotics + drainage + anticoagulation).
Provides insights into rare Streptococcal liver infections.

Liver Abscess Due to Streptococcus Infection Complicated with Portal Vein Thrombosis: A Case Report and Literature Review
Layman Abstract :
This report discusses a rare case where a liver infection (abscess) caused by a type of bacteria called α-hemolytic Streptococci led to a serious complication—blockage of a major blood vessel in the liver (called portal vein thrombosis or PVT). A 51-year-old man with fever and stomach pain was found to have a large liver abscess and PVT. He was successfully treated with antibiotics, blood thinners, and drainage of the abscess.
Only six such cases have been reported so far. Symptoms usually include fever, abdominal pain, and tiredness. While some patients recover with proper treatment, others may face life-threatening complications, showing the importance of early diagnosis and care.
