Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi erupts for 1st time in recorded history

Volcanic activity at northern Ethiopia’s long-dormant Hayli Gubbi volcano subsided Tuesday.

The volcano, in Ethiopia’s Afar region, erupted Sunday for the first time in recorded history.

The eruption covered nearby villages in the district of Afdera in ash. Officials said mobile medical services were dispatched to the remote area to help with health complaints.

The huge plume of ash prompted several airlines to cancel flights. It was expected to clear Indian skies as of Tuesday morning.
