Here's my short story about the nanobot extractor that I read at the beginning:

Stardate 3042: Mars is overcrowded and the natural resources, which were abundant after we expertly terraformed the planet, have since been depleted. The soil is red, dry, and dusty beneath our feet like it hasn’t been for 1000 years.

We look back to Earth, the home of our ancestors and the origin of our species. Our mother planet is now a frozen nuclear wasteland, but we see in it another chance. We make our way back to begin again the process of terraforming, and we overcome the planet, turning it into a lush and rich paradise, free of deserts and ice caps, free of storms and natural disasters and radiation. The planet is tamed. There, nature is brought under our subjugation, and we craft it and form it exactly to our liking, like soft clay in our hands. We thrive and grow, and Mars, which now feels like a dusty old, second-rate planet, experiences a great exodus.

However, as people are streaming back onto the refurbished Earth by the billions, a new menace is spreading slowly and quietly among the population. Something untiring, unforgiving, and almost undetectable had been lurking in the corners and cracks of the abandoned world. Something hardened and sharpened by a frozen millennium on Earth, previously content to be the sole link in a lonely and remote food chain, now took a spot at the top of ours.

There are only whispers drowned by denial at first. Only ridicule for anyone who would claim the existence of something so insidious. But soon, there are reports of people acting strangely, as if not of their own free will. As if, under the control of something. Things deteriorate quickly, and the new civilization on Earth teeters on the edge of total collapse as it becomes obvious that microscopic Nanobots have started infecting and controlling huge chunks of the population. They are endless in number, near-indestructible and self-replicating. They have one simple desire: Power. And Domination. And control. And getting what they want. Every time. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Thankfully, it's around this time that I invent the Nanobot extractor. It effectively removes all nanobots with one use, and at the same time injects a serum that fends off any further infection. However, since the nanobots are extremely difficult to destroy, we decide instead to harvest their energy, plugging every extracted nanobot into a vast virtual reality matrix. They live sedentary lives as they power our cities and continual terraforming. In their virtual world, which they think is real, we give them another version of Earth, much like our own looked before the War. There, they experience the cycle of life, death, and rebirth in the bodies of fragile creatures we created for them called Humans.
