Bisqwit’s first reaction to: TIS-100, the assembler coding game

In TIS-100, you “repair” modules by writing minimalistic assembler code, fight draconian system limitations, and compete against your peers. It runs on Linux! (And Windows and Mac OSX.) This video shows the first hour of my blind play. My first solutions are obviously not very clever, but the more time you spend, the smarter solutions you can devise.

TIS-100 was released on Steam in 2015 by Zachtronics.

The point of the game is to solve puzzles by writing short snippets of very minimalistic assembler code (even simpler than PIC16), and competing against your friends for code speed and code length.
It is an engaging way to learn the principles of assembler programming, and the very constrained and atypical platform provides challenge even to experienced programmers.

† = someone on my friend list has a better record
‡ = thanks to Thumaszz for optimization ideas
¶ = nobody on my friendslist has completed this yet
‼ = does not pass random test every time, or passes test only because testcases are flawed
※ = horrible pessimal implementation that took hours and then hours to get working
№ = no-one on my friends list has completed this yet
Frankly these are rather average results when I look at the distribution bar-graphs. I am not very talented in that regard.

It took me 52 hours of in-game time to accomplish 100 % achievements completion. At 50 hours mark, all 51 puzzles were solved at least once.

P.S. This game reminds me of Manufactoria, a Flash game I spent a lot of time in many years ago. Im not going to do a video on that, since it was already done to death on TASVideos and I got sick and tired of it. Regardless, if you haven't seen it, check it out: http://pleasingfungus.com/Manufactoria/
