Pelagic Birding 101

Presentation starts at 12:05

Presenter/moderator: Amanda Preece
Expert panel: Bill Hubick, Don Roberson, Kai Russell, Brian Sullivan, John Tsortos, Catherine Webb

Pelagic, or "open ocean", birding is when you go looking for bird species that live on the open ocean, like shearwaters, storm-petrels, alcids, albatrosses, and others. Bird watching from a rocking vessel may initially seem like birding on "hard" mode, but it's a fun way to see highly specialized species, with the added bonus of seeing other amazing ocean residents, like whales or tuna.

This introductory presentation will showcase the amazing bird species that grace Monterey Bay and will encourage newer birders to try pelagic birding this fall! The short presentation will be followed by a Q&A panel with local pelagic birding experts, discussing:

- how to study for a pelagic birding trip
- how to prepare for a day on the water
- ideal times and locations for pelagic birding
- recommended equipment and techniques for spotting pelagic birds from a boat

This presentation is intended to help newer birders feel prepared to try a pelagic birding trip out of the Monterey Harbor, with the pelagic bird season starting up mid-August. Monterey Audubon will be sponsoring a special pelagic trip during the Monterey Bay Festival of Birds on October 10th, with a focus on beginners. Details to come. See you on the water!
