What is self-confidence?
Dictionary meaning of confidence is - a belief or trust in powers/ability of something or someone. It is a state of your mind.
A confident person is admired and respected by everyone. If you are self-confident, then you earn the confidence of others. However, if you are not confident, signs are – over-apologetic, fumble when you speak, nervous while doing important tasks like public speaking, interview, presentation etc. If you have these symptoms, then you lag in self-confidence and the effect is failure in personal and professional life.
Wait! Do not lose your heart. There is good news. Here are two important points.
1. No one is born with it, and
2. You can build self-confidence like any other skill.
Ok friends. Now the most important question is- How to build self-confidence?
As I said before, confidence is a state of mind. Hence your mind must believe that you have the ability to perform certain tasks better than, if not best, than others.
How this will happen?
Answer is-building self-competence. I mean, develop the necessary skills required to achieve the goals.
What I mean is make a list of activities which you are not very confident doing (goals). First select difficult activities, then more difficult. Go from difficult to very difficult.
Then find a good mentor who will make you sweat hard. I call it net-practice. Practice very hard.
The next step is most important.
It's ACTION!
I call it match-practice-actual performance.
Now you may FAIL. Watch the self-talk. Decide whether you will bounce back or give-up. There will be naysayers who will pull you down, laugh at you, or mock you.
Who is important for you?
These negative people or your success?
Your success is also going to affect your family very much.
Do not pay any heed to these leg-pullers. Go ahead. You are not doing anything illegal or unethical.
These small actions and small achievements will pave the way for big achievements and build your self-confidence. Then go for more difficult and important activities.
One more thing!
You will always have some self-doubt no matter how much you practice. So go ahead despite of some self-doubt. No one is fully confident. To be brutally honest, even I am not always 100% confident.
