How to Make Herbal Infused Oil | Healing Plantain Salve Part 1
Today I have a tutorial on how to make a healing herbal infused oil from plantain - or any herb, really. Plantain soothes inflammation and pain and you can often find it in your backyard! This is part one of the tutorial; part two is coming next week and will cover how to turn your infused oil into a herbal salve.
// INGREDIENTS
- Plantain leaves (other optional herbs include comfrey, calendula, and lavender)
- Carrier oil - options are olive oil, sweet almond oil, or coconut oil
//DIRECTIONS
1. Dehydrate your herbs in a dehydrator, an oven, a vehicle, or by hanging them.
2. Fill a pint jar ⅔ full of herbs, pressed down.
3. Fill jar with carrier oil to ½ from the top, and screw lid on.
4. Place an old rag in the bottom of your slow cooker, and place jar(s) on top. Fill the slow cooker with water to just under the jar lids.
5. Turn slow cooker to warm (about 100-140 degrees F) and put lid on (unless the lid makes the water too hot). Replenish water as needed to maintain the original level. Infuse for 2-3 days.
6. Strain herbs out of the oil by using an old t-shirt, thin fabric, or several layers of cheesecloth. The finer the holes, the less herb particles will be in your oil. I like to hold the fabric/cheesecloth over a bowl with a rubber band.
7. Store oil in an airtight glass or metal container, out of direct sunlight.
