Why Does Cutting An Onion Make Us Cry? | BYJU'S Fun Facts

Onions are one of the most commonly used vegetables around the world. Sauteed, fried, or even raw, onions make every dish better whether it's a soup or a sandwich. But, why does chopping an onion make you cry? Onions have amino acid sulfoxide which has a strong, pungent smell to keep predators away. When we cut an onion, this acid is released along with some special enzymes. When these enzymes react with amino acid sulfoxides they form another chemical called Syn-propanethial-S-oxide. But why do onions have these acids and are they bad for us? How does the acid reach our eyes? Why does it make our eyes burn? Why do we end up in tears? Watch this video and learn why onions make us cry.
