Public life has been thrown into disarray by the scorching heat; with heatwave-like conditions prevailing as early as April, the streets have fallen silent. Markets and thoroughfares lay deserted during the afternoon hours as the heat shattered records from previous years. Jaisalmer baked like a furnace today, leaving residents confined to their homes as even air coolers and air conditioners proved ineffective. Pedestrians were seen wandering in search of water and shade, while the Meteorological Department issued a heatwave alert.
