Although certain data on its origin can be traced back to documents placed around 1200, with the construction of the Castrum on the most unassailable part of the natural valley chosen by the first inhabitants of these lands, the first traces of settlement date back to the age of bronze.
The same masonry found in the ancient medieval village and other important archaeological evidence lead to the affirmation that the ancient fortress built on the tuffaceous hump still visible today, has been inhabited since 1000 BC.

The presence of numerous Etruscan tombs, violated and plundered in different periods, and used in later periods first as homes and then as barns, stables and closets to store food or to shelter domestic animals, testify how Vallerano was integrated into the territory that had its name of Etruria.

Only after 300 BC with the passage of the Romans in the Selva Cimina and the defeat of the Etruscans in the battle of Lake Vadimone, the entire territory suffered the dominion of Rome and, later, the barbarian incursions with devastation and destruction, depopulation and abandonment of the settlements.

After the 8th century, with the beginning of the new historical phase and the different organization of the territory and with the development of the power of the Church and the importance of its landed properties, Vallerano entered the Patrimonium Sancti Petri, with the deed of donation that Pope Adrian IV made between 1154 and 1159, and remained there for a long period.

But there was no lack of transitions from one possession to another. Thus his subjection to Viterbo already appears as early as 1188, then renewed in 1254, exactly three years after the promulgation of the Statute of Viterbo.
Vallerano passed from the dependencies of the city of Viterbo, to the Di Vico family (1188-1278) and then to the Orsini in 1306.

Around 1500 it was assigned to the property of the Apostolic Chamber and then passed to Pier Ludovico Borgia and, finally, to the Farnese family until, with the destruction of the Duchy of Castro of which Vallerano, under Ranuccio the Elder, became part, it returned to possession of the Popes around 1785. Finally, in 1870 Vallerano became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
