Rhino Love

A rare glimpse into the world of the courtship of Indian rhinos. This is the pair at the Toronto Zoo, Ashakiran and Vishnu, preparing to (hopefully) breed. The opportunity presents itself only a couple of times a year and the two need to be outside for the proceedings because there is a *lot* of running. Asha has the stubbier horn; that's an easy way to tell them apart if you aren't looking at them from behind.

Note all the "squirting" Asha is doing throughout this video. Also, the "whistling" sound you hear for most of the 7 minutes is emanating from her: it's another signal to Vishnu that she is "ready to go".

This "dance" went on for quite a while. The keepers hope that breeding took place late in the evening, after dark and away from prying eyes.

Apologies for the sound suddenly coming alive about 10 seconds in. Not sure what happened there. And the shakiness—although I do know what happened *there*. ;)
