WATCH: Poet Elizabeth Acevedo on the toll of COVID-19 on essential workers
November Now Read This author Elizabeth Acevedo spoke with the PBS NewsHour’s Jeffrey Brown about the devastating and disproportionate toll COVID-19 has taken on communities of color and essential workers. “I think a lot of it is how do you support folks so that they can actually stay at home?” said Acevedo. Acevedo said some of her friends and family members, who are Dominican-American, have had to keep working even as the U.S. death toll from the virus has soared. People of color and women make up a disproportionate number of workers deemed essential.
“It's sad to know that the people you love ... are mistreated in such a way and not mistreated necessarily by their employer, but this whole society that lets people perish.”
