Icelandic horses

Icelandic Horse is one of the oldest breeds of horse in the world. It was our goal to see these pure beauties during our drive around the recent Ring Road drive in Iceland, and it didn't take us long before we saw plenty of horses grazing on lots and lots of green pastures over the volcanic terrain. These horses are everywhere. It is said that 80,000 horses in a country that has a population of only 300,000 people.

There are so beautiful and definitely people friendly. As you approach the barbed wire fence, they tend to walk towards you. Lot of pushing andf shoving to come to close to you ;-)

What makes these guys unique?

Obviously, the long hair. But more importantly, their fifth gait. While other horses have the walk, trot, canter, and gallop, the Icelandic horse can tölt.
